(Chen Yiqing) On April 18, The GZIST Lecture Series invited Professor Lin Lunlun from Guangdong Technological Normal University to speak about the interrelationship between reading and character enhancing. Professor Lin is an expert in the State Language Resource Experts’ Core as well as Guangdong Province Leading Expert and Deputy Director of Chaozhou Culture Research institute of Jinan University. Cui Huailin, Director of GZIST Research Office, Zhou Weizhong, GZIST Dean of the School of Humanities and Education, Zhou Wuhua, Deputy Librarian of the University Library, and Professor Chen Jufen from the Music Conservatory of Guangdong Technological Normal University attended the lecture, hosted by Chen Nanxian, Vice Dean of GZIST School of Humanities and Education. Professor Lin donated ten sets of books and Deputy Librarian Zhou Wuhua presented him a certificate of donation.
First, Professor Lin dissected in his lecture the five key elements of character: ideological, humanitarian, personal, temperament and psychological and emphasized that reading can not only help increase knowledge, but can also refine one’s sentiments and make both internal and external cultivation so that fine character will naturally flow. Professor Lin introduced the 5+1 reading method, the intensive and extensive approach in reference to literary master Qin Mu’s “Whale Swallow” and “Cow Chew”. He encouraged our students to read extensively, in our own way, as well as focus on classics. Besides, he advised our students to cover as wide array of subjects as possible: Philosophy, History, Aesthetics, Art, with special attention to our regional culture: Lingnan, Chaoshan, Hakka. He then recommended ten must-read books for the unfolding of our vision and nourishing of our inner heart. The lecture came to a wonderful conclusion after the Q & A session.
